Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Ghana

The goal of this school, which is described in more detail in the link below, is to increase capacity in oceanography in Ghana and the rest of Africa.  After a 2014 exploratory trip, during which my colleague Joseph Ansong and I visited three institutions in Ghana, we have been running schools for one week every summer since 2015.  The venue alternates between Regional Maritime University and University of Ghana from one year to the next.  The school has grown to include about 10-15 US participants and 100 African participants per year, ranging from undergraduates to faculty.  The school includes lectures, labs, field trips, boat trips, and, beginning in 2018, a “project track” in which participants can work with mentors on short research projects.  In 2017 we started to get a number of participants from African nations outside of Ghana.  That number grew even larger in 2018, demonstrating that there is a regional need for a school like this.  Our future vision for the school involves securing funding for long-term stability, and adding research capability.
